WYNDHAM VISION... RIVERBANK PRECINCT
Embracing its unique river setting, the Werribee City Centre will combine with the Werribee Employment Precinct and grow as the Capital of Melbourne's New West; a focal point of economic, cultural and environmental excellence. The population of Wyndham is forecast to grow from its current size of 147,000 people to around 400,000 people within the next 30-35 years. To serve this growing population, Wyndham and Melbourne's west will require a regional capital city as a focal point. The Werribee City Centre, together with the Werribee Employment Precinct, is envisioned as the capital of Melbourne's new west: 'Werribee City'.
The Riverbank Precinct is bound by Watton Street to the south and the Werribee River to the north. A strip of privately-owned properties lies between Watton Street and the river. Restaurants, cafes and specialist retail are the primary land uses along this strip. These businesses currently address and activate Watton Street, but turn their backs to the river. The river environs are currently difficult to access and underutilised.
Major public space projects are planned to enhance and embrace the Werribee River and Wyndham Park. The Wedge Street Piazza will be the first of these projects: an important new public space and key gateway to the River and Park Precinct. The Wedge Street Pedestrian Bridge is planned to extend from the Piazza across the river and connect the City to Wyndham Park. The Riverbank Promenade is to extend east and west from the centrally located Piazza to eastern and western riverbank gateways, creating a precinct akin to 'Southbank' in the Melbourne CBD.
This new infrastructure will allow pedestrians and cyclists to move into, along, across and through the Werribee City Centre's River and Park Precinct from the urban parts of the City Centre and surrounding residential areas. Restricted vehicle access through the Precinct is also proposed (concealed below the Promenade), to provide access to the car parks of new developments overlooking the river and park.
